Help from website designers please???

Hi,

If you were looking to set up a q%26#039;n%26#039;a site like this one what would you need to do/buy and in what order. i%26#039;m a novice, i thought you would have to buy a hosting package and domain then buy a piece of software that allowed you to make a bespoke site (i heard actinic was okay). then design your site with the software and then upload it. but what role does cms play and how can you make everyone%26#039;s answers to be open to seo.

any help much appreciated, thanks in advance.

If you are a novice, a site like this really isn%26#039;t a good place to start. This is a fairly complex site, with a lot of code running both the back end (the database that stores the answers and the information about users) and the front end (the clever pop-ups and fading in/out text etc). If you%26#039;re just starting out with web design you need to pick something much simpler for your first go.

The other thing to understand is that software like Actinic isn%26#039;t the right thing for something like this. Actinic and similar software is to allow you to easily set up a basic e-commerce site, ie it does all the programming for your catalogue and shopping cart etc. However, something like Yahoo Answers again is going to be much more bespoke, and really can%26#039;t be done via ready-made software.

You will need to learn a back-end language like PHP or Python, plus HTML and CSS to format the pages and Javascript for the clever effects. Design software like Dreamweaver is much more the sort of thing that you need - but note that this won%26#039;t do anything for you, it will just give you the tools to create a site once you understand the languages.

Sorry to be so pessimistic. It%26#039;s good that you%26#039;re ambitious but you should start with the basics first.

Other Replys:I reccomend Dreamweaver for your front end of the website because its very easy to learn PHP on. Although, any GUI would really do the trick. Not sure on D base software though

Other Replys:I would personally try to understand the %26#039;building blocks%26#039; of web pages. These include Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Play around with these first, using notepad/Textedit or another plain text editor. As your confidence grows you can then look at making the content more interactive. PHP can help you add interactivity.

I would leave looking for a host until you are ready to use/test the interative parts of your site.
